Lot 245 , Two Chinese concertina fans, Republic period, 30 and 31cm long

Two Chinese concertina fans, Republic period, the first a paper leaf fan painted birds amid flowers, inscribed to both sides, silver wire inlaid lacquer guards, the second with chrysanthemums, inscriptions to both sides, the bamboo guards carved in relief with calligraphic inscriptions, 30 and 31cm long

Provenance: the vendor's father worked acquired this lot whilst working in China and Hong Kong in the 1950s.

The first fan with ebonised and silver wire inlaid guards has some slight wear to the edges of the concertina on the fan leaf with some slight splits to the ends, the painted decoration all looks original and the side with the birds amid flowers has been reglued to the guard on one side with lots of excess glue around the area and stuck to the outside of the guard, otherwise in reasonable condition, the second fan is painted on silk to one side with flowers and foliate and has some slight nicks to the very edge, the opposing side its inscribed with calligraphy again on silk on a gilt powdered ground and there is a slight split to the silk next to one of the guards and some slight splits to the silk where they join the sticks, the hinge of the bamboo sticks and guards are held in place with a bamboo pin which comes apart easily but would be easy to repair.
