° Willmott, Ellen - The Genus Rosa, drawings by Alfred Parsons, 2 vols in 25 original parts, with 125 (70 and 55) only, of 132 chromolithograph plates, tissue guards, numerous uncoloured plates and illustrations to text, in original printed wrappers, all contained together in two original publisher’s green portfolios, with ties, John Murray, London 1910-1914. Note: Ellen Willmott (1858-1934) was a distinguished horticulturist who played a significant role in the Royal Horticultural Society. She was one of the first two women admitted to the Linnaean Society and the first to receive the Victoria Medal of Honour for British horticulturists in 1897. Her garden boasted over 100,000 plants, and she sponsored botanical expeditions to places like China and the Middle East. At her home, Warley Place in Essex, she employed at least eighty-five gardeners, and more than sixty plants were named after her or her home. Throughout her life, she was involved in numerous professional horticultural projects and authored two books, Warley Garden in Spring and The Genus Rosa. Despite the limited success of The Genus Rosa, which initially sold only 260 copies and left her in debt, she remained dedicated to her work until her death.
