Walter Stephens Lethbridge, miniature painter, was the son of a farmer. In 1798 he enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools. He developed a large clientele among the leading figures of the stage and established a thriving practice in his studio on the Strand.

Condition:
Item in the mother's hand looks slightly rubbed. Inscribed ..ward/..of/..lt'. Some undulation of the ivory. Colours good. A few scattered dirt and mould specks. A hairline crack running through the mother's breast, another lower down from the seated boys' elbow to the dogs' paw, a further short crack near the lower right corner. Apparently unsigned, a cutting of a related work verso. Further label inscribed 'To William Douglas'. Slightly loose in a plain brass frame, minor chipping to the glass in the lower right corner.
