Sir Ernest Albert Waterlow RA, RWS (1850-1919)
oil on canvas,
'Wesleydale',
signed, Exhibited at the RA 1918,
42 x 60in.
Estimate £4,000-6,000

This work looks to have been relined 40 years ago or more and now is in somewhat neglected condition, the canvas remains tight and the paint stable, with impasto showing clearly in the clouds, sheep and brambles at the bottom along with the reflections in the river, little sign of any craquelure, however it is also very dirty with yellowed discolouration, numerous dirt specks, what looks like mould blooming on the lower left side and dirty brown drizzle marks running through the sky.
Frame looks to be the original gilt gesso example which is rather dusty and dirty but remains in tact, with the title of the work noted at the bottom, back of the work covered in cobwebs and general dirt, bearing the label for N Mitchell of Duke Street, London, giving a telephone number of Whitehall 4213. Overall dirty but will clean to very good effect.
