° Nightingale, Florence - Notes on Nursing: what it is, and what it is not. new edition, revised and enlarged. original blind decorated and gilt lettered cloth, yellow e/ps. (distressed). Harrison, 1860. Note: inscribed on front free e/p. 'Presented to the Probationers of St Marylebone Infirmary by Florence Nightingale Dec: 1884'. The St. Marylebone Infirmary, built on land found in North Kensington, opened in 1880, replacing any 'sickroom space' that would have existed in the local workhouse; Nightingale founded there a training school for nurses - one of the very first in such an establishment. St Marylebone had been her old stamping ground, just prior to the outbreak of the Crimean War she had been superintendent of the 'Invalid Hospital for Gentlewomen', in Harley Street. Such was her drive and influence that at once the Marylebone 'sick poor' had a purpose built hospital, staffed by 'Nightingale' nurses, it being officially opened, in 1881, by no less personages than the Prince and Princess of Wales
