Miniature of Rembrandt as a young man, 1634, monogrammed, inset into a gold mounted tortoiseshell snuff box,

Miniature in essentially very good condition; one tiny raised bump in the enamel in the purple below his chain (this looks to have always been there) and a few tiny white spots on the work and on the inside of the glass which look readliy removeable, monogram at 3 o'clock.
Box ; Spotting around the gold margin at 1, 2, and 9 o'clock.
A long crack running around the outer edge of the lid from 3 to 6 o'clock. A star crack on the inside of the lid and some shallow surface chipping to the edge of the base, small rubbed patch to the outer edge of the base and light wear to the underside, interior of the box is tortoiseshell with a gold rim, gold mounts bearing French duty marks, box diameter is 8cm or 3.25in., a small paper label with attribution to Hone attached inside.
Purchased from Whittington Fine Art in Feb 2000 for £875.
