° Manuscript Naval Diary. 1843-1845. Written by unnamed nephew of Commodore Daniel Pring (1788 - 1846)* - probably James Hurly Pring (1817-1889) on board HMS Thunderer. (approx. 140pp.) 8vo. bound in contemporary dark blue morocco, marbled endpapers. The diary starts with descriptions of Devonport, Devon, Cork, then on down the coast of Africa to Cape Verde, Cape Pidgeon, Simons Bay and Cape Town. He talks of visits to Table mountain and dining with George Napier and his wife. On to Mauritius, Bourbon, St. Helena, and the Azores. Includes sections on astronomy with small maps and drawings in the text. Sections to rear talk of time spent in London, Taunton and Bristol. James Pring was a doctor and a published author.
*Daniel Pring was involved in British invasions of the River Plate War of 1812, the Battle of Lacolle Mills and the Battle of Plattsburgh. He spent many years posted in North America before dying of yellow fever in Jamaica in 1846.
