Lot 675 , Line Vautrin, a gilt bronze belt buckle
Line Vautrin, a gilt bronze belt buckle, designed as confronted sprays of lotus leaves, narcissus and carnations, length 10.7cm, signed Line Vautrin
Dubbed 'the poetess of metal' by Vogue in the 1940's, Line Vautrin (1913-1997) was born into a family who owned a bronze foundry, which proved the perfect medium for her talent. Self-taught, Vautrin's striking designs in bronze and occasionally gold encompassed jewels, accessories and sculptural mirrors. She found prominence through participating in exhibitions like the 1937 Exposition Universelle in Paris, and subsequently opened galleries on Rue de Berri, and later on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where her designs caught the eye of figures such as Yves Saint-Laurent and Ingrid Bergman. After her death, she was honoured with a major restrospective of her works at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1999.
