Condition:
Oil on canvas relined many years ago, the canvas now pulling away from the original backing, canvas is undulating, paint and varnish are very dirty, with signs of retouching dead centre in the column and further small surface scratches, dents and tears throughout, most notably one hole in her skirt and a scuff near his feet, looks to be unsigned, housed in an 18th century gilt gesso frame which is now rather dried out and tatty, no sign of any labels or inscriptions verso. Sir James Esdaile served as the Lord Mayor of London in 1777 and was painted by Joshua Reynolds in 1789, the work held by Mildred Lane, Kemper Art Museum, Washington DC.
