Jean Davey Winter explores the tension between abstraction and representation through her paintings, prints, concertina books and folding map works. She draws on her extensive travels in her choice of subjects. Blue Vortex, for instance, is part of a series inspired by a research trip to the hot springs and geysers of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.

Born in Leicester, Davey Winter studied printed textiles at Birmingham College of Art and Design and, alongside developing her own practice, went on to teach, including as course leader of the Fine Art degree course at BCUC, High Wycombe. She now lives and works in Hastings.

Davey Winter exhibits in the UK and internationally and her work is in public and private collections in the UK, Japan and the USA, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, Japan; the British Consulate New York; Bankfield Museum, Halifax, Yorkshire; and the Crafts Council, London.
