James Wilson Carmichael (1800-1868)
oil on canvas
Dutch fishing boats and a man o'war off Folkestone
28.5 x 36in.
Estimate £1,200-1,800

Oil on canvas relined many years ago, canvas remains flat, paint a little dirty with a fine but stable craquelure showing through much of the paint, apparently unsigned, label verso from Frost and Reed with the attribution to Carmichael, further label for Aldridge Brothers Frame Makers and a title plaque to the front of the frame again with the attribution to the artist, housed in a frame probably dating to the period it was with Frost and Reed which is in fair condition, comes for sale from a deceased estate.
Curiously the central vertical stretcher does not run in the centre of the work but is offset the right, this may indicate that the work was once a little larger and has been cut down on the right hand side which may well account for the lack of signature.

Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid.
