Lot 1219 , James Peel (1811-1906) Punting on a country stream, 16 x 24in.
James Peel (1811-1906)
oil on canvas,
Punting on a country stream,
16 x 24in.
Estimate £300-500
Oil on canvas cleaned, relined and restored 20 - 30 years ago, canvas still good and tight, a fine but stable craquelure showing through the work predominantly in the sky, in addition fine lines showing around the stretcher marks, some slight discolouration particularly of the yellowish white tones in the sky which does appear to include some retouching notably at 12 o'clock just above the trees, along the stretcher lines and little touching here and there within the sky, not signed, in a later gilt scroll frame which is in good order and bears an attribution plaque to the artists, labels verso for Stacy Marks of Eastbourne, along with William Rivett of London. Overall good condition, might benefit from a light clean, one tiny strip of gilding missing from the frame.
Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid.
