Lot 1160 , J* Spencer (fl.1812-1822) Ham Common, 25 x 30in.

J* Spencer (fl.1812-1822) Ham Common, 25 x 30in.

J* Spencer (fl.1812-1822)
oil on canvas,
Ham Common,
25 x 30in.
Estimate £300-500

Oil on canvas relined 40 - 50 years ago or so, relining does not fit perfectly within the frame with additional canvas showing across the top and to the right, this may just be where the work has slipped, canvas remains tight, paint has a very odd patchy appearance with a nicotine coloured yellow varnish interspaced with patches of white overpainting, clearly this needs to be cleaned with doubtless further retouching to the sky and perhaps reducing in size slightly, the work from the horizon downwards overall appears to be much more original with nice paintwork for the carriage and figures in the foreground, housed in an old but not original gilt gesso frame which is drying out and cracking, title plaque on the frame.

The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid.
