Note: Both journeys were undertaken for the Royal Geographical Society and both met with disaster. The first expedition made the discovery of a river and much useful territory, and in a skirmish with the natives Grey was badly wounded by a spear and was forced to abandon the expedition. The second expedition resulted in the discovery of the Gascoyne River, but a hurricane damaged their stores, the boats were wrecked and the party had to journey overland for 300 miles to Perth - all but one survived.
