In September 1825 Lafayette returned from a triumphal tour of the United States, visiting the sites of the battles of the American War of Independence in which he had participated over forty years before. Lafayette lived at the Château de la Grange-Bléneau to the south-east of Paris, which he had acquired with his wife Adrienne, between 1802 and his death in 1834.
