Note: Sir John Miller Adye G.C.B. R.A. was sent to India in July 1857 as assistant adjutant-general of artillery. In May 1859 he was appointed to command the artillery in the Madras presidency and in March 1863 he became deputy adjutant-general of artillery in India. In all, Adye served nine years in India. The 'Ethel' referred to may have been his daughter, the fourth of his six children.
