Note: Sir John Miller Adye G.C.B. R.A. was the son of Major General Stephen Gallwey Adye C.B. R.A. (1783-1831). He was a distinguished army officer who served in the Crimean War, Indian Mutiny and the Egyptian War of 1882 and held the office of Governor of Gibraltar between 1883 and 1886. He was also a talented amateur artist.

Other watercolours of Bamburgh Castle by Adye are in the Royal Collection and National Trust Collections. The castle was extensively restored by Baron Armstrong, who purchased it around 1890. Adye's son-in-law (married to his daughter Winifreda) was the nephew and heir of Armstrong.
