The Austrian sculptor Fritz Maierhofer started a residency at the Sir John Cass Faculty of Arts, London - the first metalsmith to do so, in 1986. He lived in the Barbican and was inspired by the huge construction projects the city was undergoing at the time. The steel girders he saw heavily informed his designs during this period, exemplified by this pair of earrings.
