Lot 559 , French, Royal Exchange London. A Victorian brass mounted ebonised bracket clock, 26in.
French, Royal Exchange London. A Victorian brass mounted ebonised bracket clock, the arched dial with silvered strike silent and Roman chapter ring, signed twin fusee movement with anchor escapement, 26in.
Estimate £1,000-1,500
Overall this clock appears to have received a fair amount of embellishments and may well be a composite piece made up from associated parts. Wooden casework slightly faded, a dark brown rather than ebonised black with a number of fine splits running through the wood notably vertical splits above the arch of the door and also at the sides, finials look rather crude, appear to be gold painted rather than gilt, equally the fret work below the top finial looks later, key hole to front door looks rather large and may be lacking an escutcheon, dial in good order, some signs of oxidisation around the chapter ring, inscription of French along with address is on a slightly different colour gilt ground to the order beyond the chapter ring, slight wear around the winding holes, movement sits very low in the case and does not have a footboard, but is held in place by its attachment to the dial and with two side brackets which are attached with non-matching screws. Pendulum retention bracket looks associated, backplate is engraved with the name French and the address but now has two holes drilled through the central oval which seems inappropriate. This does have a repeat function though the cord is broken it is working. Movement not tested for timekeeping. Overall a fairly showy large piece that requires some cosmetic restoration however not one for the purist.
