Frederick William Hayes (1848-1918)
oil on canvas,
A busy estuary,
signed and dated '90,
17 x 31.5in.
Estimate £100-150

Oil on original canvas in untouched condition, very slight sag to the canvas along with slight stretcher marks showing top and bottom, some fine craquelure showing particularly throughout the sky where it is just starting to lift in the top right corner where some small flaking has taken place. Four patches of varying ages have been applied to the back and retouched, one through the top of the brown sails on the right another bottom right corner, there is a loss of paint above the moored barge on the right to such an extent that one can only just see some remains wefts of canvas, two further patches towards the top left corner. Otherwise paint looks in need of a clean, housed in a later moulded wood frame which is in good order, no labels or inscriptions verso.
