Frederick Buck (1771-1839) Miniature portrait of Lieutenant James Fraser Ross 2.5 x 2in.

Frederick Buck (1771-1839)
watercolour on ivory
Miniature portrait of Lieutenant James Fraser Ross of the 26th Foot (Cameron Highlanders). Joined the Regiment as Ensign 4th May 1809.
2.5 x 2in.
Estimate £800-1,200

A very slight curving to the ivory and a number of fine scattered dirt specks particularly from 11 to 3 o'clock, some of this is on the glass but some on the work, otherwise looks to be in good order, not signed, housed in a dented papier mache frame which has lost its original suspension loop, details of the sitter inscribed on a label verso.

Very slight undulation of the ivory where it is just starting to the lift up on the left and right sides, otherwise looks to be rather dirty with a number of scattered dirt specks although some of these are inside the glass rather than on the work itself, possibly slightly smudged on the margin between 4 and 6 o'clock where the background looks darker than one would expect it to be, housed in an old papier mache which has a hole pierced through the front, fairly recent paper label verso giving details of the sitter.
