Lot 95 , Four Peoples Republic of China Banknotes, dated 1953,
Four People's Republic of China Banknotes, dated 1953, comprising 1, 2, 3 and 5 Yuan, folded
Estimate £100-150
From the collection of a Hong Kong Tea Merchant who worked for Jardine Matheson & Co Ltd, before 1940.
All four of the notes have been folded in half with a hard crease, the 1 Yuan note has some light brown spotting in places otherwise in good condition. The Yuan note has a slight star watermark and the 2,3 and 5 Yuan notes have a watermark with a pattern of stars and other decoration.
The notes were collected by the vendor's father-in-law during his time in Hong Kong. He went out to HK in the late 30's and was employed as a tea merchant by Jardine Mattherson. He served in the 8th Army during the ww2 but was already back in HK when he married in '46. In 48 he was in Shanghai where my husband was born.
We know he was still in HK in Dec 62 when he resigned as a Justice of the Peace and the Commissioner of Essential Services Corp. We believe he returned to the UK in '63/64 with his collection.
