If this were a motor car we would describe the condition as being 'barn find', this work has not been hung for many years and will require a fair degree of restoration, it has clearly been relined many years aog 50 - 100 years, please see our photographs of the back of the work where the Christie's stencil no's 820BP and EJ117 clearly shown, along with collectors seal mark at the top of the stretchers, the canvas remains tight, the paint itself is very dirty with blooming clearly showing across the work, some white mould down the left hand side and some fine but stable craquelure most prominently in the flesh tones but also throughout the darker areas, perhaps one small repaired scratch in the lowest portion of the armour of the left hand figure, an SR monogram showing approx. 4 inches beneath the right hand die, housed within a 19th century ornate gilt gesso frame with acanthus and ovulo moulding which is starting to separate at the corners and suffers from numerous small losses. Attribution plaque to Salvator Rosa at the front of the frame.
