Follower of Fra Bartolomeo
oil on wooden panel,
Virgin holding a chalice and fruit,
15.5 x 11.5in.. later vineous carved frame
Estimate £1,500-2,000
Oil on a thick wooden panel which has been reinforced at the back with 3 horizontal strutts. Cracks showing approx 0.5 inch in from the margin of the image, these to some extent relate left and right to additional strips added to the panel but do not appear to relate in any obvious way to the top and bottom where if anything the cracking is more prevalent, these do look to be later additions which are overpainted to match. Otherwise paint is rather dirty with a fine but stable craquelure showing through the flesh tones. Small worm holes showing through the front of panel along with signs of some minor retouching scattered throughout. Back of the panel shows more prevalent worm holes with areas where clearly much of the inner board has been eaten away. Remnants of Christies number showing 977HA?. Two paper labels, one inscribed no.8 JAC'D.... by Fra Bartolomeo ? and another 'many years ago I gave this picture to my daughter Galta, to whom it now belongs'. Signed Jacques?. Frame equally showing a lot of worm holes to back, from the front showing separation at the corners with some small surface losses to gilding which is now taking on a more matted bronzed tone.
