Condition:
Red coat - old paper label indistinctly inscribed 'Thos Burgoyne...Edw Penny Esq,...Painting to the Royal...December 11 1770'. A further smaller inscription below. Label to one side reads 'Thomas Burgoyne, 1791, son of John Burgoyne, married Susan Blauturn of Southwell'. Inscription on the edge of the frame reads 'No3. Thomas Burgoyne Died 1791 (Son of John)'. Canvas sagging, paint dirty with stretcher marks showing and a fine craquelure throughout. Frame cracked at the top. Green coat - circular label reads 'John Burgoyne, born 1742 Died 1787 married Sarah Runnford, son of Thomas Burgoyne and Susan Blauturn'. Outer edge of the frame indistinctly inscribed and No 10. Canvas saggy with dirty and craquelure through the paint. Frame cracked and broken in several places. Child - outer edge of the frame inscribed 'John Burgoyne of Higham Ferrers Died 1729'. Canvas sagging, paint dirty with craquelure throughout. Chipping to the top of the frame. Frame size 36 x 31.5cm, all have degrees of damage and re-gilding, the pine stretchers have opened joints but not to the detriment of the canvases. Provenance: Private Kent consignment.
