Edwin Dalton Smith (1800-1883)
Known for portrait miniatures and botanical studies, he was the son of painter Anker Smith (1759-1819) and lived in Chelsea, London. He exhibited much of his work from 1816-47. He exhibited at least 66 works at the Royal Academy and an additional 13 at the Suffolk Street Galleries.
He worked for a time with Robert Sweet's Flower Garden. He published his work in several publications, including Geraniaceae and Flora Australisca. He also worked for Maund's Botanic Garden. Smith was for many years attached to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew--one of the world's premier institutions for botanical studies.

Condition:
He; Very slight lifting of the ivory along the left side, slightly pulling away from the ormolu mount, otherwise good condition. She; some inward curving of the ivory and some dirt spotting. Slight outward bowing of the top of the ormolu mount. Chip/flaw to the glass at 6 o'clock. Both with fine quality ormolu mounts with pendant loops verso, red morocco leather cases. No details of the sitters available.
