Early 19th century English School
oil on canvas
Portrait of a gentleman 30 x 25in., together with a Victorian portrait of a gentleman
30 x 25in.
Estimate £300-500

Early 19thc portrait has been relined some years ago, canvas is tight, paint looks dirty and neglected. A fine but stable craquelure running through flesh tones, further fine craquelure elsewhere which is drying out and flaking away across bottom. Frame looks to be original but is now tatty with losses to all 4 corners, no inscriptions verso. Other portrait showing stretcher marks and a fine craquelure throughout, a whitish bloom showing in craquelure of the darker areas. Frame looks original probably overpainted but in fairly good order, 1 or 2 cracks and small losses. Back of frame has old faded label that may give some clue to who the sitter is.
