Oil on original canvas which is now looking a little saggy, stretcher marks showing around the edges, one or two small spots of retouching and a fine but stable craquelure running throughout the browns, the white of his stock and the pinks of his face, no sign of any signature, housed in probably the original gilt gesso frame which is now looking a little tatty. Old label verso inscribed John Chatfield Tyler Esq D.L. Gloucestershire of Vittoria House, Cheltenham 1787-1851, Son of John Tyler Esq of Redland near Bristol and Martha (Chatfield) ... in Family Church, Cheltenham.
Monogrammed AP and dated 1820 on the back of the canvas.
