Early 18th century English School
oil on canvas
Portrait of a gentleman wearing a brown cloak and lace ruff by repute a member of the Thompson family
oval
29.5 x 24.5in.
Estimate £1,200-1,800

Oil on canvas looks to have been relined in the past 20 years or so, canvas remains tight, paint looks a little dirty with a fine craquelure running throughout, there is a small loss of paint near the top right corner, possibly a little overpainting in the fur at the back of her right shoulder but overall paint looks to be original, housed in an old but not original gilt frame which is a little tatty, no labels or inscriptions verso, no family knowledge of how the picture entered the family or who it might depict.
