Circle of Jacob Cuyp
oil on panel
Portrait of a gentleman wearing a sash and lace-trimmed coat
30.5 x 24in.
Estimate £1,500-2,000

Oil on panel which has been extensively reinforced from behind, the reinforcement looks to be probably a later addition, viewed from the front the panel has a number of vertical cracks each approx 3 inches apart running down through the work, these are quite noticeable as splits particularly through his face but also more prominently to the left side than the right, in addition there are horizontal crack marks where the panel has separated approx 2 inches down from the top margin, paint looks like it has perhaps been somewhat overcleaned in the past and now looks a little thin, old hand inscribed label verso stating 'No 17 Cuyp Van Tromp Coll. Arthur Hughes', Attributed to Cuyp.
Housed in a period frame which is now looking rather tatty.
