Circle of George Gower (c.1540-1596) Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, 22 x 17in.

Circle of George Gower (c.1540-1596)
oil on wooden panel,
Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I,
22 x 17in.
Estimate £2,500-3,000

Oil on an old wooden panel which curves inwards at the sides, splitting showing running vertically up through the panel in the centre and also 1 inch across from the top left corner, this split runs down approx. 4 inches, the central split runs through the left of the panel and shows some loss of paint through the lower portion, a further horizontal line running across the bottom approx. 1cm up from the base, this appears to be in line with where it has formerly been framed. Otherwise paint is rather dirty with a fine but stable craquelure running through much of the paint most notably the paler tones, a bitumous bubbling present in much of the darker red of the dress, no labels or inscriptions verso, attribution plaque attached to the frame which is an old but not original dark wood frame suffering from a fair amount of worming and some losses to the inner gilt gesso slip.
Comes for sale from a private house in Kent.
