A Rating Present from his attached father, July, 30th 1856’’, with a further inscription - ‘’Walter Butler. From his mother, Sept. 1878’’, Smith, Elder & Co., London, 1855, together with a collection of related ephemera, including a photograph of Capt. Butler’s dog ‘’Tankgul’’, [the image is clearly the the origin of the depiction of the dog in R.G. Woodthorpe’s watercolour of ‘’Captain Butler and his Party among the Naga’’ sold at Christie’s 22nd May, 2008] The dog was killed by a spear during the ambush, on 25th Dec 1875, by Lhota Naga tribesmen, which also resulted in the death of Capt. Butler; a 7 page a/l dated 11th January [1876], from Lieut. R.G. Woodthorpe Royal Engineers, to Col. Johnson, recounting the death of Capt. Butler; an ambrotype portrait of Lt. Col. John Butler, [Capt. Butler’s father]; a manuscript recipe book, written by Capt. Butler’s sister, Henrietta, (1806-1852), 4to, 72pp, dated March 17th, 1831, covers detached, partly disbound; a large collection of Butler family letters and postcards, mainly from the early 20th century; and five Butler family books - Curtis, George William - The Wanderer in Syria, 1852; Our English Home: Its Early History and Progress, Trench, Richard Chenevix - Notes on The Parables of the Lord, 1864 and 2 other devotional works.

Note: Capt. John Butler - British Colonial Officer and Deputy Commissioner of the Naga Hills, then a political agent there. Led several early expeditions to Naga and Manipur Hills, died 7th January, 1876, from a wound from a Naga spear, aged 33.
