Van Baburen - Purchased Bonhams March 1968, Lot 173

Oil on wooden panel with elaborate later reinforcement to the back, paint is dark and dirty with a number of fine cracks most notably a diagonal crack running from near the lower left corner upwards to the gentleman's arm, other less obvious surface cracks scattered throughout along with smaller chips and scratches, a fine but stable craquelure running through most of the work, housed in an old ebonised and gilt beaded frame which is equally tatty, attribution plaque on the frame, no further provenance known, come for sale from a private collection.
