W.H.Smith took on the UK franchise in 1904 using Eric Gill in some way to provide the lettering.

This piece has a good even mid dark oak colour with a slightly dullish finish, signs of old dirt specks and minor surface wear and tear scattered throughout but overall essentially in very good order, wear showing in the apertures where books have been placed, all of the brass ware looks original and slightly rubbed from polishing, comes with keys for the locked compartment, slight separation of the moulding at the foot but only at the corners, base support again a little scuffed but looks original, very slightly wobbly but given the overall weight of the piece very steady.
