Lot 5 , An early 18th century Halifax region oak joined armchair, W.2ft H.3ft 8in.

An early 18th century Halifax region oak joined armchair, W.2ft H.3ft 8in.

An early 18th century Halifax region oak joined armchair, with scroll cast cresting rail, diamond cartouche carved back, on baluster legs, W.2ft H.3ft 8in.
Estimate £400-600

A handsome chair with a good rich colour, signs of old age and wear however closer inspection suggests that this chair is not 100% original, looking at the back of the chair there are two struts added to reinforce the top rail which has been broken away at some point, back timbers of the chair look to have been heavily scrubbed down and the underside of the chair does not show the same ageing and patination that the surface would suggest, so overall the view should be taken that this chair is an old reproduction of some quality, it could also be described as a Wainscot chair. Slight wobbling to the joints of the frame but overall eminently usable in the current condition.
