Lot 178 , An Edwardian crossbanded satinwood breakfront bookcase, W.6ft 6in. D.1ft 5in. H.5ft 3in.

An Edwardian crossbanded satinwood breakfront bookcase, W.6ft 6in. D.1ft 5in. H.5ft 3in.

An Edwardian crossbanded satinwood breakfront bookcase, with Greek key cornice, W.6ft 6in. D.1ft 5in. H.5ft 3in.
Estimate £700-900

Top of the bookcase is polished timber which is an unusual feature showing a fair amount of old cracking through the grain and numerous small surface scratches and dents, the extreme outer corners of the Greek key moulding have lost a small section on both left hand corners and the far right hand corner, front doors are slightly faded but still with some strength of colour, fine tiny splits showing in the grain of the veneers, one section of veneer just starting to lift on the left side of the left door, the left door also has one of the curved glass panels cracked, both central doors have a crack running through one of the quatrefoil shaped panels, right hand door has one tiny loss to a small section of the astragal barring, comes with one key and four working locks, 15 original adjustable shelves, plinth foot looks a different colour and shows far less character in the grain, therefore might well be a later replacement, sides showing mould spots on the left, better on the right, overall a handsome bookcase that would benefit from three repaired panels of glass and a little repolishing to the veneers.
