Adrienne Lester (20thC)
oil on canvas,
Portrait of a Parsons Jack Russell terrier, standing upon a table,
signed,
28 x 36in.
Estimate £400-600

Oil on original canvas with various patches and overpaints to the back to repair a number of dents and tears, principally a 't' shaped tear runing across the back of the dog and then down through the body of the dog, a further inverted t shape near the top of the dogs front legs, further damages with overpaint showing in the dogs rear legs, behind the back of the dog and towards the top right corner. Other smaller damages scattered elsewhere, the main way of repairing these appears to have been by using some sort of thick gunky paint and applying it to the back of the canvas along with an old reline, canvas now undulates, paint is extremely dirty, but overall should restore to good effect, signature is lower right, the painting is housed in its original heavy giltwood frame which is now equally looking rather grubby, pose of the dog might well suggest that this was for showing purposes, we do not have any accurate dates for when this artist was working however the style and framing would suggest this picture to date from c.1900.
Comes for sale from a private collection.
