A very rare silver George III nipple shield, hallmarked London 1797, makers mark is half rubbed but attributed to Charles Hougham, Diameter 6.5 cm.

This very unusual and rare piece is described as an aid to personal health and hygiene, described in the Silver Directory as ' A small protective object to be placed over a nursing woman's nipple during infant feeding, a conical protuberance that fits over the nipple, having a varying number of small pierced holes, diameter of the disc range from 4.5 to 6.5 cm'. this is a 6.5 cm one, there is a 6.5 cm one in the Wellcome Collection Science Museum in London dated 1799.
Minor surface scratches in general, otherwise good condition. Hallmarks clear except maker's mark which is partially rubbed.
