A rare and very finely embroidered 18th century four compartment double sided ‘Hussif’ or housewife, made to store important sewing items in a sewing box or skirt pocket. This example made from fine hand spun linen, worked with the finest silk threads, embroidered into many decorative spot motifs and a long large verse on the back, embroidered with a fine vining border, as many samplers of the day. This ‘Hussif’ embroidered in coloured silks embroidered in the finest microscopic stitches, edged with yellow ribbon, height 45cm, width 15cm

Condition:
The ribboning has worn on the outer edges in places and various colours faded with age, the backing cloth marked with handling and use. Considering how delicate the fabric and embroidery is, it’s condition is good, in such a rare domestic item.
