A pair of Japanese cloisonné enamel ‘Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove’ dishes, Meiji period, one dish decorated with three scholars and the second with four scholars amid bamboo, on a blue sky ground, brocade patterned borders, the reverse decorated with a central sixteen petal chrysanthemum mon, within lotus flower and scrolling tendril borders, 30.2cm diameter.

This subject relates to seven famous Chinese Daoist scholars and is a popular subject in Chinese art but unusual to see in Japanese decorative arts.

Typical minute pitting to the enamels the blue ground has an unusual fine crackle, a little grubby, the wear to gilding on the rims, otherwise in good condition.
