As well as being an avid collector of Rockingham ornamental porcelain and animal figures, Dr. Dennis G. Rice was an academic and wrote two key reference works on the subject – Rockingham Ornamental Porcelain (1965) and the Illustrated Guide to Rockingham Pottery & Porcelain (1971).

The figure of Swiss Boy has firing cracks to each side of his hat, in three places to his back and to the tree stump. There are tiny glaze losses to the tips of his left fingers, a small loss to one leaf and matt areas to the gilding on the edge of the base. There are burnt patches to the biscuit base. There may be items missing from each hand.

Swiss Girl has chip losses to the front of her bonnet, the ribbons between her bonnet and shoulder, the ends of the bundle of sticks on both sides and to the flowers in the basket. There are firing cracks to her back, left arm, the staump beneath her skirt and to her left ankle. There are matt areas to the gilding on the edge of the baseand burnt patches to the biscuit base.
