Lot 401 , A harlequin set of twelve (6 + 6) William IV mahogany dining chairs,

A harlequin set of twelve (6 + 6) William IV mahogany dining chairs,

A harlequin set of twelve (6 + 6) William IV mahogany dining chairs, including two carvers, with bell flower carved cresting rails, scroll carved splats and drop in seats, on turned and fluted tapered legs and sabre legs
Estimate £400-600

These chairs comprise six with pierced foliate scroll spars which includes the two carvers, these six are of a dark mahogany tone, one carver has had breaks around the top of the legs this has been rather crudely repaired with some screws on the left side, the other carver is in better order but both are slightly wobbly and show separation in the joints at the front of the arms, the remaining four matching chairs are similar in colour one is a little lighter and again slightly wobbly in the frames, cresting rails to all of the chairs have come loose and been repaired at a later date using rather thick glue and a variety of screws, this applies to four of the chairs which the exceptions being one carver and one single chair. These chairs have turned and fluted tapered legs with some denting and scuffing commensurate with use, the other six chairs have tablet spars and sabre legs, these are slightly lighter but still a rich mahogany tone and overall in slightly better condition with no obvious signs of repair, they sit slightly lower in height, the chairs with scroll spars are 83cm and the other set are 82cm in height, seat heights are 46cm on the first set and 46cm on the second set, all have drop in seats with rather old upholstery which would require replacing, overall but for the difference in leg these chairs are a fair match but one set does require a fair amount of restoration and repolishing.
