Lot 209A, A good Chinese export tortoiseshell snuff box, 19th century, diameter 12.5cm

A good Chinese export tortoiseshell snuff box, 19th century, diameter 12.5cm

A good Chinese export tortoiseshell snuff box, 19th century, carved in high relief to the cover with figures amid pavilions and trees, diameter 12.5cm
Estimate £800-1,200

The cover of the snuff box when closely inspected with a strong light, there are several figures lacking their heads and the figure just above centre is lacking a left hand, the base of the snuff box has a split to the side which is not easily visible from the exterior but can be seen on the interior. On the outer rim of the base there is a small section which has been let in with a rectangular fillet holding in position, this may have been done in manufacture as the tortoiseshell matches so well, otherwise in good condition.
