Lot 744 , A fine Belle Epoque diamond brooch, early 20th century

A fine Belle Epoque diamond brooch, early 20th century

A fine Belle Epoque diamond brooch, early 20th century, centring on a circular-cut diamond weighing approximately 0.80 carats, within a floral brooch with palmettes to each end, set with circular-cut diamonds in millegrain-bordered platinum, length 4.9cm, fitted case stamped Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd

The unusually flat, stylised form of this brooch possibly takes its inspiration from Japanese art, in particular the various family crests, or 'mon' that appeared across many of the Japanese decorative arts imported around the turn of the 20th century. The central sixteen-petalled chrysanthemum motif of the present brooch is commonly recognised in this context as the 'kikumon' or 'chrysanthemum seal' of the Emperor of Japan and the Imperial family.
