Lot 496 , A William IV silver gilt ovoid snuff box by Benjamin Smith,

A William IV silver gilt ovoid snuff box by Benjamin Smith,

A William IV engine turned silver gilt ovoid snuff box by Benjamin Smith III, with interior engraved inscription, ' Formerly the Property of the Earl of Exmouth, England', with engraved initial and scroll thumbpiece, London, 1832, 95mm.
Estimate £250-350

Viscount of Exmouth 1757-1833
Edward Pellew British Naval Officer
Fought in American War of Independence, The French Revolution and The Napoleonic War.

There is some very minor loss to the gilding around the top and bottom edges and the thumbpiece, otherwise in nice clean condition. Hallmarks clear.
We have been informed that Edward Pellew was a Viscount not an Earl which now questions the validity of the engraved inscription
