Lot 74 , A Victorian mahogany and brass bound two day marine chronometer by A. Johannsen & Co, 19cm

A Victorian mahogany and brass bound two day marine chronometer by A. Johannsen & Co, 19cm

A Victorian mahogany and brass bound two day marine chronometer by A. Johannsen & Co, makers to the Admiralty, with British ordinance mark, alterations to hinged cover and losses to fittings, 19cm
Estimate £300-500

Outer case looks to have had the top lid reduced, typically the hinge is in the middle of the height of the box, in this case the lower portion of the case is 4 inches high and the upper section or lid is only 1.5 inches high. Look of the timbers varies, in our opinion the entire top of the case is a later replacement, lacquered brass ware looks original and untouched if a little worn, mechanism to hold gimbal steady is now re-attached, dial looks original with one or two dirt specks, movement with spotted plate and bi-metallic escapement, ticks briefly then stops, appears to be over wound, screws attaching the gimbal frame to the lower part of the case also appear to be altered.
