Lot 1494 , A Rathbone dental unit and accessories

A Rathbone dental unit and accessories

A Rathbone dental unit and accessories Developed in 1915 and used into the 1960s, the 'Rathbone' was one of the most popular dental units used in the United Kingdom. It combines a dental drill, lights, self-flushing spittoon and other dental equipment. Made by the Dental Manufacturing Co. Ltd.
In July 1948, the NHS was opened by health minister Aneurin Bevan, making dental treatment available to the whole population, free of charge, for the first time. This sudden expansion of treatment meant that, at first, there was a shortage of specialist dental equipment. Units such as this were instrumental in providing affordable health care to all.
A fully restored similar model is found in the Science Museum, London. The link is: https://wellcomecollection.org/works/shfk5efm
