A Philips 18 inch Merchant Shipper's globe, depicting the principal steamship routes, railways and principal British and US cables, manufactured by George Philip & Son Ltd of 32 Fleet Street, with mahogany underframe on fluted legs and understage set with a compass, H.3ft 8in. Diam.24in. H.

The body of the globe has an aged yellowed tone with fine but stable craquelure running throughout with the exception of the USA, Gulf of Mexico and top of South America where damage has occured and it now has a matted finish with some retouching. Also some rubbed wear at the bottom around the south pole. Frame is of a good rich colour, ring around the equator has wear to the papering with losses to the inner edge of the paper. Compass to the base is not working and has white blooming on the inside of the glass.
