A Jaques ivory chess set, of traditional design, castles stamped with a crown, kings 3in., housed in a Carton Pierre box, decorated with medieval figures and turrets, 8.5in.

No Jaques mark to the base of the white king and no marks on the board.
Casket with some chips to the lid along with cracking running from 9 o'clock towards 6 o'clock, doesn't come quite to the edges of the lid, a further crack at the back of the lid and damage to the back left corner, interior is lined with old but probably not original green velvet, all the corners of the casket are suffering from some separation and damage and some attempt at re-gluing has been done on the right hand side, further cracks running through the right side which look like old repairs, black felt underneath. No label to underside, probably later black velvet.
White chessmen:
King - top finial missing from king, hairline crack running through underside
Queen - minute chips to the tips of her coronet
Bishops - both lacking finials
knights - one with crescent shaped chip to the foot rim, the other with crown stamp to the top of the head
Castles - one with crown stamp to the top, the other with two small chips to the foot rim
Pawns - two with cracks running from the edge towards the centre of the underside, one with small chips to the foot rim and the top ball finial has been broken away and restuck.
All with buttery ivory cream colour, some small signs of fading

Red chessmen
King - top finial missing
Queen - notable chips around the edges of her coronet
Bishops - one missing its finial, the other with rubbing and wear to finial
Knights - wear to extremities, one with crown stamp to top of head
Castles - one with crown stamp to top and two large chips out of the foot rim, the other with wear around the top and two small chips to foot rim
Pawns - Most with some wear to the ball finials but otherwise good
Leather folding board worn and battered around the edges.
