A Japanese ivory netsuke of a cockerel seated on an oval box, 19th century, 4.3cm high

A Japanese ivory netsuke of a cockerel seated on an oval box, 19th century, the box with horn inlay, unsigned, 4.3cm high
Estimate £200-300

Provenance: purchased from Whalley for £60 in June 1974.

There are fine age cracks to the netsuke all over, around the cockerel's head, on its rear tail feathers and particularly on the oval base including around the inset horn dots, there is some wear to the high points of the carving and engrained staining consistent with age and use, there is some slight filler restoration to the very top of the tail feathers where it curves over and in fact the pin inlay is small sections of horn when viewed through a 10 x loupe.
